The Little Birdie!

I love old cars. Nothing beats the smell of a carb and the simplicity. Now the Japanese classic segment in Sri Lanka is still a growing culture. Since Japan has taken over much of our mundane daily driver life, an European is normally the first choice when it comes to classics!

But the culture is quite vast elsewhere in the world, especially in Japan where they have a huge range of sub cultures when it comes to tuning their oldies. And its nice to see that Sri Lankan's are taking interest too! This here is a well sought after classic in paradise island (due to its rarity). The sweet little 510 two door is owned by Dr. Suneth Rajawasam.

The name ring a bell?? Well he's the guy who owned the rad little Integra which we featured a while back (which has gone through extensive surgery). Say hello to his new project and gift to his loving wife to get her into the world of motoring!

Now its not complete as yet! But I thought I would feature it before it went in for its operation. We shall be keeping a close watch on its progress throughout.

How can you not love a face like that?

Plans for the car have already been set out. Which includes a complete body restoration and respray. We managed to source Suneth a BRE front lip which would make the front end real mean. In addition to that the Doctor has sourced a whole list of great parts for the car, including a L16 twin carb engine!

He was good enough to let me drive the little thing. Reminds you how much fun you can have in a car with so little electronics and driver aids!

Gotta have a black and white shot!

If you were wondering, an original set of SSR Mesh wheels have been sourced too! Managed to decide on a new colour for the ride too, but we shall be keeping it hush hush for now!

I would love it more if this had fender mirrors!

Stepping into the cockpit you are greeted by that gorgeous Nardi steering wheel!

The standard 510 dash has been swapped for a Bluebird dash.....

Look at the patina on that wheel! Character! That is real wood by the way, not like what you would find in your Allion!

He managed to find this beautiful wooden gear knob that feels just right in your hand!

That clock is going too, to be replaced with an authentic Tachometer!

Well thats all we have for now. Wishing Suneth and his little 510 all the luck in the world. Wish him well as his car will be going in for a complete restoration end of next month.

See you guys soon with more posts

  1. I dont know what it is with you and Allions, if it is disgust with the nouveau riche and all mudalali types then I get it. Then you can extend your critique to their lack of taste. But as someone who loves cars, You should probably learn to "listen" to cars, and that more often than not, it wasnt the car's choice to be body kitted and driven by a Philistine. Allions and Premios are good cars, albeit overpriced (due to our lovely tax structure). But good article nonetheless and Suneth! Fantastic work!, Looking forward to see the next step in your resto. Excellent Job. Good to see interest in Jap Classics.

    1. I hate Allions. Dont get me wrong, they are reliable and comfortable cars. I have driven a few my self. But its not a car. Its just a machine. No soul, no passion. The older Corolla's and Premio's had a little bit of character at least that made them interesting. And the the main reason why I hate it is because the people who drive them think they drive the best dam car in the whole world.....
