The 70s were famous for Bell bottoms, Disco fever and roaring gas prices. The American muscle car was dying a slow death and the imports which were once considered cheap and unpatriotic started to look more interesting in the eyes of the cash strapped consumer.  

Introduced in 1970, the first of Japan's production "specialty cars," chic personal coupes built on a sedan chassis, turned out to be a ground-breaking success. It exuded flair, came onto the market at the ideal time, and instantly became popular among both amateur and professional racers. Most notably, it was essential in creating Japan's illustrious automotive culture and cemented Toyotas motorsport prowess. 

The media campaigns for the Celica were filled with phrases like "wild" and "untamed," and the tagline of the advertisement played on its sleekness: "From a Nation of the Future, Celica."

With a name derived from the latin word Coelica meaning 'heavenly' or 'celestial', It was appropriate because nothing else on the market had its curved lines. 

Its spherical shape brought to mind the traditional good luck charm known as a daruma, combined with its recessed headlight "eyes." The moniker persisted, and fans continue to refer to these first-generation cars as "Daruma Celicas" today.

What we have here is a very early model 1970 TA20 Celica Coupe. Which has been lovingly restored to its original condition. Much time and money has been spent to getting this car back to factory condition. Some subtle improvements have been made along the way, but that just adds further appeal to this particular example. 

In 72 the gasoline tank was moved from underneath the rear floorpan to between the back seat and trunk in and turn signal and brake lights were separated...

as a result collectors now covet the older "onetail" lenses more.

A set of period correct Work Equip 03s wrapped in Bridgestone tires along with Eibach lowering springs have improved the stance and overall look of the car.

Practical upgrades like the air-conditioning system and modern stereo add to the usability of this Japanese classic. It will easily sit in traffic and get you around town without a fuss, it is a Toyota after all , but you'd look cool doing it. Plus it is pretty frugal on fuel if you're one to worry about such details. 

Inside, is a mix of dark vinyl and faux wood trim with a multitude of recessed gauges that remind you of the glorious 2000GT. 

The soft vinyl seats are comfortable and the thin rimmed steering wheel make manoeuvring this car a breeze. 

The custom wooden gear knob with the engraved logo is a nice touch, along with the seat head rest which has been embossed as well. 

The same level of treatment has been carried out in the engine bay like the other areas of the car, keeping things original as possible, even down to the correct colour air filter housing. Everything has been overhauled and restored which makes this a proper turn key classic car.  

The early Celica's insignia resembled a dragon or a dragon masted viking ship. If you look attentively, you will see that every curve in the car's bodywork is represented by a different portion of this emblem. It's unfortunate that modern automobiles lack such  characteristics.
