Go Orange!

The Ford Laser and the Mazda 323 shared the same platform, engine and running gear. It was just the badge and a few cosmetic differences that differentiated them. These cars have a great cult following over here in Paradise Island. Want to get into motor racing? Well this is the perfect car to start!

Most professional race car drivers in Sri Lanka started out their racing career in one of these. The model shown here is a slightly rare hatch back version of the KB chassis Ford Laser.

Sadly due to this reason, most of them end up been rear ended, rolled over and who knows what! And the few that are left on the road are just ruined with silly body kits and what not!

Here we have an exception though. This lovely hatch is owned by one of close friends boy friend, Pasan Desilva. I had never seen the car before and when she showed me this car one day, I just had to take some good pictures of it!

No silly body-kits on this one! Its pretty bone stock to be honest.

But there is something about this car, I cant seem to put my finger on it. It just is so darn cool!

Even under the hood its got the stock 1.5 Carburetor 4 Cylinder engine. Just lightened up with a straight through exhaust that makes one heavenly racket on full throttle!

The owner seems to be a big Ken Block and Gymkhana fan! Hence the DC shoes decals and the funky orange paint on the wheels!

Its the wheels that really make this car stand out from the rest! Even though they are 14' the funky colour and simplistic design make it a very good mod.

On the interior side of things, Pasan has installed this retro Hot rod style steering wheel with a whole bunch of auxiliary gauges to tell him what the car is doing.

The original guages seemed to have a luminescent effect on them! Gotta love the 80's design!

Oh and how can i forget the wonderful seats this had! These super tight Recaro's really hold you in place! And an Army themed camo bandanna thrown in for good measure too!

Also had this slick RAZO gear knob, that went well with the short shift gear box.....

Some Ford love!

I shall leave you with this shot. Just goes to show that you can take an average looking hatch, throw in some good mods and you have one very eye catching car! Big Thank you to Kuvini Gamage and Pasan Desilva.

  2. this is one of only a few Laser Sports that came in. Really smart cars. Most were raced, I think this was as well, used to be a metlalic blue if I recall. Nice to see it in nice condition

  3. I actually owned one of the '83 sedan version similar to this car. Mine was 1.5L and all the stock parts were in there. Good car. But hard to find spare parts and they were jolly expensive. Sadly I had to let it go 5 years back. I heard the guy who bought it had raced it and had a minor crash and was trying to rebuilt it. Don't know what happened to it afterwards. I'd love to buy it back if the current owner is willing to sell it. It was on 12- plates and was light metallic green at the time
